Ma Yong is a professor of flute at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, a doctoral tutor, and director of the woodwind department; a first-class performer; guest principal flutist of the China National Symphony Orchestra; and a member of the jury of the 17th Tchaikovsky International Music Competition.
In 1987, he was admitted to the Central Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Prof. Wang Yongxin, and in 1998 he was admitted to the Juilliard School of Music, where he was the first ever Chinese flute student, studying with the renowned flutist Carol Wincenc and the principal flutist of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Robert Langevin, and received his undergraduate and master's degrees with honors from Juilliard. he has won a series of international competitions: in 1999, he won the Special Prize at the Kuswinski International Woodwind Competition, followed by first place at the 2000 Washington Flute Competition and the 2002 New York Flute Competition; in 2002, he won first place at the New York International Artists Competition and gave a successful solo concert at Carnegie Hall; in 2003, he won a second prize at the National Flute Competition organized by the American Flute League. In 2003, he won first place in the National Flute Competition organized by the American Flute League. The New York Concert Review published the following review after his Carnegie concert: "Ma Yong, a young flutist from China, has achieved a marvelous performance in the highly competitive field of flute playing, with impeccable technique and a mastery of interpretation. "
Ma Yong has served as Professor of Flute at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music since 2019, and prior to that served as principal flutist of the Central Opera House, the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, and the Louisville Symphony Orchestra. He has trained many outstanding students who have been admitted to top music academies at home and abroad with excellent results. since 2018, he has been invited to be the flute instructor of NYO CHINA (Chinese Youth Orchestra).
He has held many tours and masterclasses at home and abroad, and has been invited to give recitals and masterclasses at events such as the International Flute Festival in Taiwan, the United Nations Headquarters in New York, the Xian Xinghai Art Festival in Kazakhstan, and the Bologna Art Festival in Italy; he has performed with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Louisville Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Malaysian Symphony Orchestra, Evergreen Symphony Orchestra in Taiwan, China Philharmonic Orchestra, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, Hangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra, Guiyang Symphony Orchestra, Central Opera House Symphony Orchestra and other orchestras; invited to serve as a jury member of the Third Nicollet International Flute Competition, Guangzhou International Flute Competition in 2018 and other major domestic and foreign flute competitions, and invited to serve as a jury member of the 17th Tchaikovsky International Music Competition, which is the first flute jury member from China since the organizing of the event. In 2014, as the only flutist, Ma Yong was awarded the title of "China's Top Ten Wind Instrumentalists"; in 2018, in the most authoritative European flute magazine "Flöte Aktuell", Ma Yong, as the first cover character from China, actively promoted the development of China's flute career. Ma Yong has been actively promoting the development of the flute career in China.
