MIYAZAWA Flutes
– The colours of sound. -

The history of Miyazawa is as multifaceted as the sound of its instruments. Since its foundation, one guiding principle has defined the company’s work: building a “flute for life” — an instrument that accompanies musicians over the long term, inspires them, and supports their individual tonal vision.

1969 – The Origin of a Vision
In 1969, founder Masashi Miyazawa realized his dream in Japan. He set out to create a high-quality instrument that combined the precision of traditional flute craftsmanship with the possibilities of modern manufacturing technology. This combination continues to shape Miyazawa to this day.
From this approach emerged a transverse flute that set new standards in workmanship, mechanism, and tonal character. The idea that technical innovation must always serve musical expression became the foundation of the company.

"When we began building the first Miyazawa flutes, our goal was to create an entirely new class of handmade instruments. I believe we have succeeded: our team of dedicated flute makers combines the greatest achievements of centuries-old traditions with state-of-the-art technology in order to present this unique line of refined, technically and musically mature flutes.”

International Influence and Technical Innovation
In the mid-1970s, Masashi Miyazawa collaborated with American flute maker P. L. West. The aim was to develop an instrument tailored to the tonal preferences and playing styles of North American flutists. This partnership led to the development of new material alloys, an exceptionally wide range of headjoint options, and the distinctive Miyazawa tonehole scale.

In 2005, another milestone followed: in cooperation with Danish flute maker Johan Brögger, the Brögger System was significantly refined and patented. The pinless system allows for extremely precise and delicate mechanical adjustment. The individually adjustable spring tension for each key creates a highly personalized playing experience. Miyazawa is the exclusive licensee of this mechanism, which is used in all Handmade models. The result is enhanced comfort, precision, and durability.

Quality Without Compromise

Miyazawa flutes are crafted from carefully selected materials and manufactured by highly skilled specialists. Each instrument represents meticulous workmanship, technical accuracy, and tonal depth. The warm, resonant, and expressive sound has made Miyazawa a preferred choice worldwide — from ambitious students to professional soloists.
“Handmade” is not a marketing phrase, but a working principle. Traditional craftsmanship and modern technology do not compete — they complement each other.

Expanding the Portfolio – The MJ Models

In 2013, Miyazawa introduced the MJ series. It was designed to bridge the gap between professional Handmade instruments and high-quality entry-level models. Production takes place in close cooperation with a carefully selected manufacturing facility in China, with all processes closely supervised and controlled by Miyazawa Japan. Quality assurance and final inspection follow clearly defined standards.
In 2025, the next generation was introduced with the MJ-II. Building on the experience gained from the first series, it continues the commitment to making high-quality Miyazawa instruments accessible to beginners and advancing players — without compromising on standards.

2017 – Foundation of Miyazawa Flutes Europe

With the establishment of MIYAZAWA Flutes Europe GmbH in 2017, the company strengthened its presence within the European flute community. The objective was clear: to provide more direct, faster, and more personal support to customers across Europe.
Miyazawa Flutes Europe has since been responsible for distribution in Germany and Austria. In other European countries, the company works closely with local partners. Since 2025, distribution in Romania has also been managed directly.
“For Miyazawa, handmade is not just a phrase. Combining traditional flute craftsmanship with modern manufacturing techniques is our passion.”

2023 – New Manufacturing Facility in Komagane

In 2023, Miyazawa relocated with its entire team from Iijima to a newly constructed manufacturing facility in Komagane. The modern building provides expanded space for development, research, and production. It reflects the company’s commitment to continuously advancing innovation and craftsmanship.

Today, Miyazawa represents an international brand with Japanese roots and a global presence. The company unites centuries-old instrument-making tradition with technological advancement and tonal precision. The objective remains unchanged: to build instruments that are technically refined, musically versatile, and reliably durable — flutes that accompany musicians for many years and carry their individual sound in all its colors.
